Review: The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

Nothing living is safe. Nothing dead is to be trusted.

For years, Gansey has been on a quest to find a lost king. One by one, he’s drawn others into this quest: Ronan, who steals from dreams; Adam, whose life is no longer his own; Noah, whose life is no longer a lie; and Blue, who loves Gansey… and is certain she is destined to kill him.

Now the endgame has begun. Dreams and nightmares are converging. Love and loss are inseparable. And the quest refuses to be pinned to a path. (Synopsis from Goodreads because I couldn’t have summarized it better myself 🙂 )

Genre: YA fantasy
POV: Third person
Read this if you like: Strong heroines, Paranormal, Romance, the rest of the series
Would I recommend to a friend? Obviously! If you’ve come this far you need to finish this series!!!!!!

My Thoughts

Going in to this book my one and only thought was SAVE GANSEY! I was so nervous to see how it all turned out but let me just say that I was incredibly satisfied with TRK! Last books in a series always tend to be bittersweet but this one was especially so because I just wasn’t ready to say goodbye!

So what I look for in final books in terms of plot, much like 99.9% of you, is resolution. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a squeaky clean wrap up but I don’t want to be left hanging. Definitely wasn’t the case here! I thought the major plot points were concluded nicely. There were some unanswered questions at the end in terms of what happened to some characters but I’m not going to complain about that when the ones I was most looking for were sufficiently answered. Overall the plot of this book was strong, as to be expected. I have to say I was shocked on several occasions! Basically, it was awesome and I’ll leave it at that because I’m too tempted to spoil!

In terms of characters in the last book, I like to see that they’ve grown over the course of the series. Again, I definitely saw that here. I’d have to say, I’m most impressed with Adam’s growth throughout the series and again in this book. We really got to watch him transform into someone completely different, and at the same time not. Does that make sense? He grows so much but at the end of the day, he’s still definitely Adam. He never looses his sense of self. My one and only complaint from this book, however, is about a character. And that character is a new one. I won’t name names but I thought including a new character at this stage of the game was a bit head scratching. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t mind him I just didn’t really get why he needed to be there and if he did need to be there I would have liked to see him, at least glimpses, a lot sooner.

ALL THE FEELS. Your heart will probably threaten to shatter into a million pieces but it’s worth it. Trust me. It was all so, so good.

My Thoughts in a Nutshell

The Raven King is an absolutely fantastic resolution to The Raven Cycle. It was concluded nicely with out being too neat and unbelievable. If you’ve read even the first book you need to work your way, and quickly, to this one because it was quite simply put, amazing.

“He was a book, and he was holding his final pages, and he wanted to get to the end to find out how it went, and he didn’t want it to be over.”

“No homework. I got suspended,” Blue replied.
“Get the fuck out,” Ronan said, but with admiration. “Sargent, you asshole.”

“The head is too wise. The heart is all fire.”

“If you can’t be unafraid, Henry said, be afraid and happy.”

Let’s chat about…

Ok I’m not going to mention too many things because I really don’t want to put that many spoilers out there but I do have a few things I want to say.

Blue, the prophecy, and her origin.

Sometimes I just wish wordpress would have emojis available because really I just want to put one where the mouth is hanging open. In terms of the prophecy, I just can’t believe it was actually true! I thought there would be some kind of catch but nope!

The Gray Man

He is one of the people I wish I knew what happened to! I was a little bummed that we didn’t get to see a resolution to his story. Does he end up with Maura living the life he wants? I really want to know!

The very end

Am I the only one who wanted to see the entire gang doing something together instead of splitting off? I get that it makes sense but I kind of wanted to at least see them all interacting after everything.

Ya, did not see that coming!!!

Adam and Ronan

  1. Ahh, so happy you loved this book and the series! I’m still not over it, haha. I definitely shared all the same thoughts. I loved that there wasn’t a perfect neat ending because it suited the entire feel of the book. There are some things I would have liked more info on like Blue’s half-tree situation? I also agree about the ending I wish the gang had been together, but I can deal haha. That quote you posted with Blue and Ronan was THE BEST. I loved their friendship. AND RONAN AND ADAM YESSS!!! Fantastic review! 🙂

Thank you!!! I agree more info on the whole half-tree situation would have been nice. I mean does that mean she’s going to live longer than normal?! I loved Ronan and Blue’s friendship too! I really enjoyed that this series focused on all different types of relationships, not just romantic ones. Though I have to say when the romance was there it was fantastic! I love Ronan and Adam so much! I get giddy just thinking about them haha! 😀

      • Right! Like I really would have liked a little more information on Blue’s dad and how the entire thing happened. Oh my god yes, the friendships and romances were so brilliant! I loved that the romance was subtle, but was also really intense and emotional. I’m not normally a fan of romance, but Maggie did it so perfectly!!

Me too! I don’t mind ambiguity and leaving things open to interpretation but I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to a short story or two 😀 I agree, the romance was definitely subtle, yet intense. I think it’s subtly is one of it’s strong points because it’s not ever being forced down your throat. It just kind of organically developed throughout the course of the series to the point where by the last book I was like so attached I couldn’t even handle it, haha!

          • Some novellas or short stories would be amazing. I’d love to learn more about Maura, Calla and Persephone and how they all met. I really hope Maggie does something more with this series because I’m just so attached. And yes! Organic is such a perfect way to describe it.

YES! More info about Maura, Calla, and Persephone would be amazing! I would completely devour that. I wouldn’t mind more info on the Grey Man either, whether that’s past or future, I’m open to either haha!
